It is becoming a tradition for the Oscars to not only have winners and losers but a new category entitled ‘a#@hole of the night’. Last year it was Will Smith who slapped his way into the news with his gallant defence of his polyamorous wife, and this year it would appear the honour goes to our used-to-be favourite rom-com star Hugh Grant.
Grant has been on the receiving end of a Twitter backlash after his ‘painful’ red carpet interview with movie star watcher and plus-size model, Ashley Graham. The interview, described as painful, involved a lot of eye-rolling and meh answers from the Notting hill star, and social media was having none of it.
Granted (see what we did there?), there is only so much that interviewers can ask someone at the Oscars, but the level of disinterest shown by Grant was rather rude. One would expect more from an actor whose career almost floundered because he got caught with his pants down. How dare Hugh?
‘Ashley Graham deserves on honorary Oscar for putting up with Hugh Grant. Don’t walk the carpet if you don’t want to talk about the actual event.’
Perhaps Graham should have asked him how Divine Brown was doing lately, but we doubt he would have been more gracious, or thankful for all the attention.
All respect to Ashley Graham though as she kept up a bubbly interview despite the half-hearted responses. It surely must be hard doing these award shows – asking what everyone is wearing, who they think will win, and where they will be partying afterwards. But these are the questions that keep actors such as Hugh Grant in business, and when they forget, social media will be there to remind them.
Keep calm and carry on Twitter.
