After reading the headline you may be forgiven for thinking that Bheki Cele must have led this investigation, but this happened in Baton Rouge in the US, and just like during the KZN riots, SAPS was nowhere near the scene.
Nathan Millard’s body was found next to a Baton Rouge highway, and although the father of five was wrapped in plastic and rolled up in a rug, local police suspect no foul play as he had no visible signs of injury or trauma.
His wife reported him missing following a business trip with a client, but it was days later that his severely decomposed body was spotted by a passer-by as it lay next to Scenic Highway in Baton Rouge.
He was first reported missing on February 23 after leaving Happy’s Irish Pub in downtown Baton Rouge. Afterwards, CCTV footage showed Millard entering a bus station where a security guard offered him a lift home. He declined the offer and didn’t appear to be in any distress.
He appeared to leave for his hotel, but after a client that was supposed to meet with him the next day became concerned, police were called and his room was found empty. His wallet and phone were discovered several miles away from the hotel, but the man remained missing until the gruesome discovery was made weeks later.

While the toxicology reports have not yet been released, his family thinks he might have died from an accidental drug overdose. How he got to the side of the road is still unclear, but police are appealing to the public to come forward if they have information. One possibility that was flighted is that someone might have been with him when he died, and in a moment of panic, discarded the body.
We’re not forensic scientists, but doesn’t being wrapped in plastic and then rolled up in a carpet before being discarded next to the highway constitute ‘foul play’? It reminds us of a Simpson’s cartoon where police find a ‘clear case of suicide’ after a man fell down an elevator shaft into some bullets.
No, it wasn’t Cele who said that, but some other cartoon character.
