When a lion and an elephant meet at a water well at the Kruger National Park, the plucky pachyderm provides the punch line.
The comical standoff ensued in real-time at Naledi Game Lodge in the Balule Game Reserve, which wildlife platform Latest Sightings said was caught on an Africam trail camera shared by Aidan Rademeyer.
In the video, you get a clear view of the elephant jovially approaching the watering hole, which immediately brings the lioness to attention.
The elephant goes in for what it came for, dipping its trunk into the water to have a slurp, while the tension rises between the two animal foes:
“Elephants may not be on the menu of lions. This does not mean that elephants tolerate lions. Lions pose a threat to young newborn elephants, so whenever an elephant encounters a lion, the result is often the lion being chased away.”
The lioness can be seen (and slightly heard) hissing and growling at the elly, but the gentle giant continues drinking, until…
The elephant flings a trunk full of water at the lioness who, being a cat adverse to water, naturally, promptly skedaddles away.
With the adrenaline coursing through its lionheart veins, the elephant releases a loud roar as the scaredy-cat runs into the bush.
“The lioness and elephant both went about their day, perhaps with a newfound respect for each other,” noted Latest Sightings.
