A passenger on a United Airlines flight threatened to “kill every man on this plane” before allegedly attacking a flight attendant with a broken metal spoon.
A video was released from one of the other passengers, showing Francisco Severo Torres, 33, from Leominster, Massachusetts, going berserk during a flight from Los Angeles to Boston.
Lisa Olsen, who filmed the video, told NBC News that Torres seemed to be “visibly upset” and threatened to commit mass murder, saying that there was going to be a “bloodbath”:
“Where are they diverting us? Because wherever they do, there’s going to be a bloodbath everywhere. You can run away if you want. I won’t kill you. I’m Balthazar. Or put up your hands, because I’m Balthazar… since I’m taking over this plane,” he is heard saying.
Balthazar was one of the three wise men in the Bible who visited the infant Jesus.
Watch the frightening scene unfold:
Before lunging at the flight attendant, he was questioned about allegedly trying to open an emergency exit door mid-flight, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts said.
Crew members said that about 45 minutes into the flight, they were alerted that the “starboard side door” had been disarmed. A flight attendant inspected the door and noticed that the handle had been moved to an unlocked position.
…Federal officials said that the crew noted that Torres had been by the door and “confronted Torres about tampering with the door, to which he allegedly responded by asking if there were cameras showing that he had done so.”
When Torres tried to approach the door again, guarded by two flight attendants, he allegedly thrust at one in a “stabbing motion with a broken metal spoon”:
Torres allegedly said that he “believed the flight attendant was trying to kill him, so he was trying to kill the attendant first,” according to a criminal complaint.
The prosecutor’s office said a flight attendant was hit in the neck three times.
While the nightmare drama was unfolding in the cabin, up front on the flight deck, the captain of the flight radioed air traffic control and declared an emergency, per Daily Mail:
‘United 2609, roger. And you’re declaring an emergency?’ air traffic control asked.
‘Affirmative,’ responded the pilot.
‘United 2609, what happened on board and is the person detained?’ air traffic control questioned.
‘Person is detained, attempted opening of external door, emergency door. That person was subdued and is being detained, however not going quietly he’s just laying there with six able bodies on top of him,’ the pilot said to air traffic control.
On the ground, Torres was charged with a count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
He’ll need mental health assistance, too, by the looks and sounds of it.
