One article aptly referred to “a lot of dead people and crime” involved in the Murdaugh (pronounced “Murdock”) family.
But there’s a lot more devastation when it comes to the fading family who managed to amass power and wealth in South Carolina for over 100 years.
Their generational wealth, power and influence fueled a “jaw-dropping spree of recklessness, greed, and murder”, noted VOX, not only pointing to the “darkest parts of the soul” but also the “ugly heart of the nation itself”.
The labyrinthine case, which has become known as “the Murdaugh murders”, has finally concluded with a trial that gripped not only America but the world, with the conviction of Alex Murdaugh for the double homicide of his wife and son.
[A] century of power has crumbled in just half a decade due to a long list of financial crimes and five suspicious deaths beginning in 2015: an alleged homophobic hate crime; a deadly boating accident; a mysterious fall and insurance scam; the double murder of the family matriarch and favorite son; and a bizarre roadside incident that may have been another insurance scam.
The whole tangled web culminated in the indictment in a South Carolina county court of the floundering patriarch, Alex Murdaugh, for the 2021 murders of his wife and son — bringing the total number of charges he’s facing to over 80.
Before Alex was put on trial, the hit podcast – the Murdaugh Murders podcast – began as one local journalist’s attempt to bring attention to the tangle of secrets and corruption at the heart of the Murdaugh family, and quickly turned into a bombshell case and media frenzy ultimately resulted in a guilty verdict and two consecutive life sentences.
The Murdaugh murders became a true crime obsession, spawning documentaries on HBO and Netflix, too.
Head over to VOX to read all the gruelling details that almost sunk to the bottom of the deepest, darkest waters.
Randy Murdaugh, the older brother of the now-convicted murderer, spoke out publically following the trial’s verdict, saying that he believes his brother to be a scummy guy, but still finds it hard to believe that he killed his wife and son in cold blood, noted The Daily Beast:
Randy also said Alex isn’t telling the whole truth about what happened that fateful night in 2021. “He knows more than what he’s saying,” Randy, who is also a partner at the same family law firm where Alex worked, said. “He’s not telling the truth, in my opinion, about everything there.”
It has also just been reported that Alex and his son Buster went on a mind-numbing bender in the wake of the deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, which raised eyebrows and serious questions.
Dana Kennedy, a writer with the New York Post, said that “the vibe to this whole thing, there’s an O.J. aspect to it”, questioning why the two men would have gone out partying: “where is the sombre, sober search for the people who did kill Maggie and Paul?”
Indeed, Alex cannot be trusted and that makes him better off behind bars for two lifetimes.
