If you live anywhere near the Koeberg Nuclear Power station and hear the wailing of emergency alarms go off on Tuesday between 10 and 12 am, don’t freak out and head for the Karoo.
Management at Koeberg has announced that it will be conducting a ‘planned volume siren test’.
Eskom will be conducting a full-volume siren test of the Koeberg Public Warning System at its Koeberg Nuclear Power Station on Tuesday, March 7, between 10am and 12 noon.
As unnerving as this may sound, it’s all just part of keeping their emergency response plans up to date. The electricity provider has announced that residents do not need to take any action over the alarms, but it may be advisable t keep your pets indoors during this time as the sirens can cause anxiety for our furry friends.
“Due to the volume and sound of the wailing test tone dogs have been known to run away from home.”
Areas likely to get the full blast of the sirens are: Atlantis, Duynefontein, Melkbosstrand, Van Riebeeckstrand, Philadelphia, Bloubergstrand, Bloubergrant, West Beach, Sunningdale, Parklands, Robben Island, and farms surrounding Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.
The utility has announced that further tests may be conducted on Wednesday, March 8, and Thursday, March 9, if needed.
After the Eskom madness of the last few years, nobody wants to hear their local nuclear power plant’s emergency sirens going off, so if you have someone living in that area, forward this to them before they start heading for the hills.
