Late on Tuesday night, hijackers set a bakkie on fire along with the driver, who got stuck inside for a moment.
The 53-year-old motorist sustained burns on his arms and face during the attempted hijacking at the entrance of Mount Moreland, KwaZulu-Natal.
The driver was reportedly on his way to Sibaya Casino when four armed men in a white VW Golf attacked him, forcing him into the back of his vehicle as they attempted to steal it, reported The Citizen.
A fifth accomplice was tailing the bakkie in the getaway car.
Quick thinking, the motorist activated a security device that restricted the fuel supply of his Ford Ranger bakkie while the robbers were en route towards Umdloti.
The vehicle lost its available fuel supply, which caused the hijackers to stop on an unpaved road.
That’s when the hijackers robbed the victim of his cash and poured an accelerant over the bakkie, setting it alight before speeding off in the VW Golf.
Reaction Unit South Africa posted pictures of the burnt car on Facebook:
Thankfully, the victim was able to escape before his car burst into flames, allegedly rolling on the grass to extinguish the fire that had spread to his clothing.
He had also managed to hide a phone from the hijackers and promptly used that to contact his family for help.
A Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) member on patrol in the area spotted the burning bakkie on the side of the road and immediately requested emergency assistance from the Ethekwini fire department.
The victim was transported to the Verulam medical facility, where he received treatment for burns to his lips, face, and arms.
