Yesterday evening at around 7PM an armed gang blew up a van during a cash-in-transit heist in the middle of the highway.

The brazen road robbery occurred on the M2 East Freeway in the Germiston area, which is in the East Rand region of Gauteng.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Spokesperson Katlego Mphahle says the criminals got away with an undisclosed amount of money after taking the cash-in-transit van down in the middle of the road.

Yusuf Abramjee, a crime watch journalist on Twitter, shared a video of the aftermath of the burning van on the M2 East before the N3 North split at the Geldenhuis Interchange:

It has not been revealed how the gang managed to pull off this stunt, but it must have taken some seriously organised and targeted planning to blow the van up to smithereens as other motorists passed by.

The highway was closed down after the crime, and motorists were advised to use alternative routes while police tended to the cash-in-transit heist scene.

It was also not reported if there were any casualties or suspects arrested/charged.
