Building a city in the desert has many challenges, but having a perfect blank canvas to work on always leads to inspiration. Dubai does not have old neighbourhoods where you have to consider the ‘historic style’ of the places surrounding you. As an architect, this must be the ultimate sandbox to play in. And if you are an architect with a thing for geometry, the Atlantis the Royal is the natural result.
Six inimitable towers are joined together by a central skybridge nearly 300 feet long. Within each block are cut-out openings that add depth and intrigue to the hotel’s overall design aesthetic while helping to illuminate the overall property from within.
This 43-floor hotel boasts ‘nearly 800 guest rooms and some 231 private homes set in a series of angular, geometric boxes stacked one on top of each other like futuristic Jenga structures.’ We have to admit that it looks strange, but yet still beautiful.
The design is a reimagined take on the classic arches and arcades of Roman aqueducts.
Designed by famed Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) architects, the architectural wonder faces the Persian Gulf, with six towers joined together by a 90-foot infinity pool. KPF president and design principal James von Klemperer explained the idea was to create a unique building that stood out from the rest of Dubai’s cityscape.
“We were asked to dream big on this project. To create something unique and iconic for Dubai—and when I look at it now, I’m amazed by the audacity of the whole undertaking.”
