I have to get this out of the way quickly: no, this is not a Bob Ross biopic.
But it is a whole lot of fun and includes Owen Wilson as a Bob Ross doppelgänger who soothes the nation by painting some “happy little trees”.
The trailer for Paint doesn’t mention Bob Ross, who became a household name in the ’80s to ’90s as the smooth-talking painting teacher to the masses with his PBS television show The Joy of Painting.
HuffPost reports that Wilson appears to be a fictionalised dead ringer for the former art icon, showing off the three p’s that defined him: perm, painting, and public TV.
Paint follows “Carl Nargle (played by Wilson), Vermont’s #1 public television painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves,” according to the film’s synopsis.
Curtailing some of the sensational stuff that Ross was actually involved in, like his many affairs and how the rights to his paintings were fought over in courtrooms after his death, Paint takes on drama of a different breed:
With masses of dedicated fans and ample notoriety in his community, Nargle appears to be over the moon amid the success of his beloved art show…that is until a younger rival painter, Ambrosia (Ciara Renée), swoops in to steal his shine.
Enjoy the trailer, and especially that super cheesy scene:
The plot is not based on anything Ross actually experienced, and this painter lives in Vermont, whereas Ross lived in Florida, so nobody will be sued.
But yeah, it’s Ross-esque, and that’s enough.
Paint will be making its way into theatres on April 28.
