Almost as soon as it was reported yesterday that a tiger was roaming around in the yard of an office building in Edenvale, in the East Rand of Johannesburg, authorities said the wild animal had been recaptured.
News24 reported that Gary Wilson of the security company Swat SOS 24/7 confirmed that the tiger was located, sedated and would be taken to a sanctuary.
Clive Maher, of SCP Security, also apparently confirmed that the tigress was located in the Eastleigh area of Edenvale and sedated and taken to a sanctuary.
However, IOL reported now that the Edenvale SPCA is disputing this and is still treating the investigation as ongoing:
“No tiger has been seen by the Edenvale SPCA staff and no confirmation has been received that she is safe or alive. No confirmation or proof has been handed over to the Edenvale SPCA by SOS security yet they have made statements on their social media platforms that she has been captured and relocated.
“SOS security are the only organization that has confirmed the tigers capture and relocation but failed to hand over this information to the Edenvale SPCA. SOS security are not permitted, equipped, trained or experienced to handle wildlife yet they have stated they have captured her and moved her.”
The SPCA made this statement on Facebook:
Hit the “see more” to read the SPCA’s full account of the situation, which is making it sound like the East Rand version of Tiger King.
They said they “will not confirm that this tiger is safe, alive or at a place of safety until we have the facts”, adding that they are seeking legal advice in that regard.
As soon as there’s a formal update, the SPCA said they would update the community.
