The new Johannesburg Mayor, Thapelo Amad, has been on the receiving end of some serious shade after he announced that he will prioritise fixing potholes in his first three months in office. Because ja, that’s the biggest issue facing residents at the moment right? Those pesky holes also just ruins your day when you are chauffeured to your new office in your luxurious state-sponsored GP 1.
Ok, that might be a bit cynical and mean towards the latest mayor who only took office last week. His appointment came after the latest round of musical chairs in the City Council, but how long he will be wearing the pretty golden necklace will most likely depend on the time it takes him to annoy his reluctant partners in the coalition government. South African Twitter though, is having none of it.

This is BAD! Is he not embarrassed? How can you miss key things that needs urgent attention, things that EVERYONE is talking about?
100 days in office to fix potholes is not it. Please do more Thapelo 🙏🏽, do more. He’s thinking about his car 😭! https://t.co/J9k4geEVXV

This guy seems to have 99 problems, and potholes are the least of them. But if you get parachuted into a position as the leader of one of Africa’s biggest economies, you have to start somewhere. So let’s see what Mayor Thapelo Amad can do while he is in the hot seat. Who knows, perhaps he is a politician that understands the needs of his city, puts the voters first and roots out corruption.
Just kidding, he’ll probably get booted out the moment he asks for financial records. Start the music, please.
