The Dutch have never been afraid of a little water, especially considering that their entire country is situated below sea level. But we have to agree that a newly released video by the City of Amsterdam takes engineering to another level.
The time-lapse video shows an underwater parking garage being built in front of the historic 19th-century Centraal Station. This parking garage however will not be used by cars but, will accommodate 7 000 bicycles.
It is estimated that nearly 200 000 people arrive at Centraal Station every day, and although there is a host of public transport services available, nearly half of all these people will arrive on bicycles. Most of these cyclists are forced to make use of the above-ground parking spots, but this has become a messy problem for the city as bicycles are parked all over the place.
In fact, one of the bigger parking areas is such a sight that it has become a tourist attraction.
Have a look at the amazing construction process below:
The Dutch might live in a soup bowl below the waterline, but they sure can solve a problem.
