In the early hours of Saturday morning, a passer-by found a woman’s body washed up on Camps Bay beach.
The woman, who has not been identified yet, was apparently found at around 4:30AM and appeared to have been in the water for about 12 hours, confirmed police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi.
He said that the victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.
Per TimesLIVE, this grim discovery occurred a week after a middle-aged female in a white bikini was reported missing in the same area.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and police were searching for this middle-aged woman well into the week with no success:
The NSRI said at the time eyewitnesses claimed an unidentified woman, believed to be between 40 to 50, had entered the water and was not seen coming out.
A beach towel, dress, hat and a bag with personal belongings were found on the beach, but nothing in the bag identified the woman.
However, there is reason to believe that the woman found on Saturday morning is not this missing woman.
Camps Bay ward councillor Nicola Jowell reckons the two cases are not connected, per IOL:
“It is very sad that a body has washed up on Camps Bay Beach. It was found at 4.30am on Saturday morning. The body is not that of the woman who went missing just over a week ago (on Saturday January 21), it is a different person.
“This person is presumed to have been in the water for under 12 hours. The seas were incredibly rough yesterday and it is possible that she entered the water, not Camps Bay, however we don’t know.”
EWN reports Camps Bay police’s Keith Chandler confirming that this was the third body to wash up on the beach since the beginning of the year.
Chandler also mentioned that the person could have drowned at another beach only to be pushed by a current that made her wash up on Camps Bay beach.
Swartbooi confirmed that the police are investigating both cases and have requested anyone who can assist with more information about the victim and the missing woman to contact their nearest police station.
