Every day I look up and see the moon-crescent shapes of paragliders floating down to the Sea Point Promenade from Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.
It’s become a beautiful part of my day-to-day, and probably even more stunning from the point of view of the paraglider, gently cradled in their harness, looking at us little ants scurrying about below.
Unless they catch a bad bout of wind and land smack-bang between some rocks on the mountain. That’s not so lekker.
On Tuesday, a man said to be an international tourist in his 40s crashed his paraglider into Lion’s Head and is currently recovering from his injuries in hospital.
EWN reports that ER24 was called to the scene before 2PM on Tuesday afternoon, with spokesperson Russel Meiring confirming that the man was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital as soon as he was found:
“We don’t know how it happened, but we did treat him, and the emergency services helicopter airlifted him to hospital,” Meiring said.
ER24 said via The South African that he was found “wedged between two large rocks, being tended to by bystanders” having sustained severe head injuries.
He was airlifted in critical condition:
The details surrounding the incident are unknown, according to ER24.
