Packing for an overseas flight is troublesome.
You have to remember all the little bits to make daily life in a new place run normally and comfortably, which means the anxiety of possibly forgetting something – like enough underwear, god forbid – is extreme.
Throw in the pesky liquid and laptop rule, and you’re basically a jittery mess by the time you get to the pre-flight security check.
We’ve all held the line up by forgetting to put our laptops in a convenient spot to whip out quickly for the security baggage scan, or spent a few added minutes downing whatever liquid we forgot to empty beforehand.
As you may well know, liquids, such as sun cream, shampoo or toothpaste are required to be 100 millilitres and must be in a clear plastic bag. Passengers also have to remove items such as tablets, laptops and liquids from their hand luggage while going through security checks at airports.
Why even are we not allowed to take more than 100ml of liquid through with us?
Apparently, it’s all thanks to some dimwits who decided to try and blow up as many as 10 planes using explosives hidden in drinks bottles.
Thankfully, British police foiled that plan, but the ban has been in place ever since November 2006.
Anyway, the UK government has plans to scrap these pesky rules in the coming year, reported BBC:
The government has set a deadline of June 2024 for most UK airports to install new high-tech 3D scanners, that show more detailed images of baggage.
The changes will see the 100ml liquid rule increased to two litres and mean passengers won’t need to remove electrical items from bags at security.
Christopher Snelling, policy director at the Airport Operators Association, which represents UK airports, added the investment was a “great step forward for UK air travel, matching the best in class around the world”.
“It will make the journey through the UK’s airports easier and air travel itself more pleasant,” he added.
This new legislation will apply to mostly UK airports, so travellers are still advised to follow the old rules at other airports.
Another thing to check before you fly, I guess.
