Jeez, when was the last time we saw Eddie Murphy in a film?
Well, he’s back for a new Netflix rom-com in which Jonah Hill tries to marry his daughter.
You People throws together people from totally different backgrounds with hilarious effect, while still commenting on important societal issues.
The film’s official synopsis reads, “A new couple and their families find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences in this comedy from Kenya Barris.”
It will be the feature directorial debut of Barris, the creator of Netflix’s Entergalactic and the ABC sitcom Black-ish and BlackAF.
As Collider notes, Barris is quite comfortable with using comedy to tackle complex social issues like structural racism:
By focusing on a multicultural couple, Barris can explore how different families deal with expectations and how people from different generations can break the mold and forge new identities.
It is a positive look at racial conflicts, focusing on how love forces us to question our prejudices. And ultimately, the movie argues how love might be the tool we need to build a world where people get along better than they currently do.
Barris produced and penned the film with Hill, who is set to star in the film alongside a star-spangled bench of talent, including Lauren London, David Duchovny, Nia Long, Sam Jay, Elliot Gould, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, Mike Epps, Emily Arlook, Alani La La Anthony, Bryan Greenberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and of course, our main man, Murphy.
The trailer shows Hill trying to convince Murphy that he is the one to marry Murphy’s daughter, and the conversation goes as swimmingly as you may expect from a film about cultural clashing:
You People will be released on Netflix on January 27 next year.
