Nobody will be happier to see the back of 2022 than Elton Jantjies.

The Rugby World Cup-winning flyhalf hit the headlines in May after it was claimed that he had been arrested for “malicious damage to property” after he touched down in Johannesburg on an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai.

He was accused of banging on a toilet cubicle door for 10 minutes, saying “Komaan, my skat” (come on, my darling) while an air hostess hid inside.

Then came the news that he was having an affair with Springbok dietician Zeenat Simjee, to which he has admitted, despite Simjee’s denials.

Just when you think he’s about to make it out of 2022 without further drama, along comes a battle with his own agent.

City Press reports that Jantjies has lodged a complaint against James Adams with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and World Rugby, saying Adams has “recently sent gangsters to his home to collect money Jantjies owes him”:

Adams, the agent in question, had the pre-emptive strike in the dispute by suing Jantjies for breach of contract for failing to pay his commission last month.

…court papers said Jantjies had “accepted an acknowledgment of debt agreement in February last year” and had paid a lump sum of R300 000 to the plaintiff, Adams’ company In Touch Sports, in October.

But with the total amount owed understood to be about R800 000, things took a bizarre twist when Jantjies claimed Adams had sent gangsters to his home to collect the rest of the debt.

It’s believed that Jantjies reached out to SA Rugby for legal advice.

He was reportedly told to take the matter up with World Rugby because he plays his club rugby overseas in Japan and now France.

Adams is registered with RFU, the national governing body for rugby union in England, as an agent.

When asked if Adams had sent the debt collectors to threaten him into settling his debt with the agent, Jantjies sent a text saying: “Yes he did.”

Asked why Adams would resort to debt collectors when he had already begun court proceedings, our informant speculated that going the legal route could prove to be time consuming as well as expensive.

There may be further bad blood between Adams and Jantjies after the latter reportedly used a different agent to seal his new deal with French club Agen.

His contract sees him join Agen with immediate effect and runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.

I’m sure you’re growing tired of the coverage of Jantjies’ affair and personal life but at least we’ve stopped short of this approach.
