The whole Messi versus Ronaldo argument is really tiresome.
For the football purist, there is no doubt that we have witnessed 15+ years of utter greatness and they have driven each other to bigger and better heights.
For that, we should be thankful.
I’m of the belief that the Argentinian is the greatest footballer that has ever lived, even if his penalty-taking can be a bit iffy at times.
There are countless websites devoted to the argument – I find this one the most detailed and the stat up top is telling:
Yes, yes, feel free to argue your case for Ronaldo. I can see both sides of that coin.
Anyway, there are constructive arguments to be made and there’s the ‘argument’ presented by SuperSport presenter Tshepang ‘Twiggy’ Mollison.
According to IOL, she has been a part of the SuperSport team for a while and “forms part of a team that presents SuperPicks and numerous other magazine shows previewing the ongoing FIFA World Cup”.
You get the feeling this controversy might be the end of that relationship:

Ronaldo’s interview with Piers Morgan, where he trashed Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag, certainly damaged his reputation in the eyes of everyone bar the biggest fanboys.
Even taking that into consideration, Twiggy, it’s actually you who comes out of this looking like a bit of a p*es.
SuperSport soon issued a clarification, saying “this was a rehearsal and not meant for broadcast”:

The point here isn’t even the sentiment, it’s the total lack of bringing anything constructive to the table.
On Twitter, there was a common rallying cry:
they hired a person who doesn’t know anything about sports! SHE KNOWS ZERO.
“Ronaldo is a poes” she really thinks she’s on a twitter debate 💔 https://t.co/GeMdKZSi0J

Remember when Minnie Dlamini asked a Man of the match on a Soweto derby
“how the vibe was on the field” 😭😭
Now a basic hun is calling Ronaldo a Poes on National TV 😭
This is what happens when slay queens keep getting Jobs over qualified people.

Influencers will NEVER get mainstream gigs if this continues 😭😭 I mean what kind of argument is “Ronaldo is a poes”???! 😞 https://t.co/AV8wZE94Bt

Tshepang ‘Twiggy’ Mollison called Cristiano Ronaldo a poes live on Tv. This what happens when you bring clueless Slay Queens to talk about things they have zero idea about. She clearly couldn’t distinguish being on national TV and entertaining Blessers in Sandton. pic.twitter.com/ma3weXl21d

That “ronaldo is poes” line is wild but also sad. It is a reflection of how the SuperSport does not value talent & knowledge but influence. You can’t take an influencer with zero knowledge of sports, & the dynamics of football to give comments on the World Cup.

Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer in-studio guests who can bring some kind of insight to the table.
Instead, we are stuck with Naas Botha and influencers.
