There was a time when you could buy something close to the water in Cape Town for a relatively moderate price.
Those days have come and gone.
Anywhere from the Atlantic Seaboard through to Scarborough and beyond, you’re now paying many multiples of millions for the privilege of being able to dip a toe in the ocean a stone’s throw from home.
I was perusing properties in Mouille Point today, as one does after they buy a lottery ticket, and I wanted to see what sits at the higher end of the listings.
Even though I knew I would be surprised, I didn’t expect to find a two-bedroom “apartment / flat” listed for R49,995 million (go on, call it R50 million) on Property24:
Set on the ocean’s edge in Cape Town, a simplistic yet detailed apartment graciously welcomes you into the prestigious Water Club…
The vast under roof size of 277 square metres is covered in Hakwood wooden flooring imported from Belgium and comprises of open plan living from a Bultharp kitchen fitted with solid Oak cabinetry, Guggenau and Siemens integrated appliances, a wash up scullery area and one of 3 covered balconies.
Seamlessness flows from the kitchen through to the dining and living space that’s opens up with sliding double glazed doors to a spacious covered patio and private garden overlooking the breathtaking view of your own private marina.
There’s a bit of confusion in that the write-up says it’s a three-bedroom apartment. It’s listed as a two-bed in the main description, so we’re sticking with that.
The Water Club estate has easy access to the V&A Waterfront, the Oranjezicht market, and the promenade.
277-squares is a nice size and if you have change left over for a boat, it comes with its own private berth and basement parking fitted with a double automated garage.
I still can’t get over the fact that we’re talking about 50 bars here. Anyway, we set sail on a video tour:
Location, location, location.
On that note, I added some areas on the peninsula into Property24 to check what’s on offer.
For R57 million, you’ll find luxury in St James. I’ve always been a Misty Cliffs fan – R12 million right here.
Scarborough has a six-bedroom beaut bordering on Cape Point for R16 million and Castle Rock, en route to Cape Point and just past Simon’s Town, offers good value.
None of that likely matters to a foreigner who wants to jet in for a few months a year and be in the thick of the action in and around the CBD.
