Netflix must surely have sent Joe Exotic a few care packages in prison to thank him for being tailor-made for 21st-century entertainment.
Tiger King was one of the streaming platform’s biggest hits and the man at the centre of it all, along with Carole Baskin, was crucial to its success.
You have to be close to certifiably insane to make Joe Exotic look like an upstanding citizen. Enter professional wrestler Teddy Hart, whose story is told in a three-part docuseries, Dangerous Breed: Crime. Cons. Cats., on Peacock.
The trailer comes with this synopsis:
Canadian filmmaker Frederick Kroetsch spends 10 years trying to make a reality show about controversial independent wrestler and Persian cat breeder, Teddy Hart. After accumulating years of footage, Frederick is shocked when multiple women whom he has been filming alongside Teddy, describe disturbing accusations of sexual misconduct behind the scenes.
As Teddy defends himself against growing allegations, his protege and ex-girlfriend Samantha Fiddler, goes missing. With Samantha’s family desperate for answers, Frederick reexamines the footage and seeks out the people closest to Samantha, leading to a dramatic current day confrontation with Teddy Hart.
I don’t want to give away too many spoilers about where the case stands today.
Let’s just say there are many loose threads:
Consider this, via The Daily Beast:
It’s a portrait of an unhinged creep who lives up to [Hart’s former partner] Faye’s description as “one of the worst men on the planet.” That becomes apparent once Hart got involved with Samantha and convinced her to relocate—without her three kids—to Orlando to train at Team Vision Dojo, a school whose owner Chasyn Rance is a registered sex offender (for crimes against minors) and the producer (along with Hart) of wrestling fetish videos.
Before long, Hart bailed on Samantha, and the evidence on display strongly suggests that he stole her Canadian passport and left her to her own devices as a veritable illegal immigrant in Florida. There, after a few months of working as a landscaper (and, possibly, exotic dancer), she dropped off the radar, never to be seen or heard from again…
Carole Baskin had Don Lewis and his disappearance, and Hart has Samantha vanishing into thin air.
