Seeing the kinds of things people with f**k-you money buy really feels like a kick in the ribcage.
Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe, AKA Salt Bae, has been slammed on social media after sharing a bill of about R3 million (615 065 United Arab Emirates dirham).
Nobody has enjoyed how the chef-turned-meme star insensitively gloated about the exorbitant bill as one of the worst cost-of-living crises in modern history plays out worldwide.
While some families struggle to put bread on the table, a party of 14 guests spent a beyond-lavish evening at his popular restaurant Nusr-Et Steakhouse in Abu Dhabi, renowned for serving up 24-karat gold-coated steaks.
The amount really skyrocketed when two 2009 Louis XIII Pétrus wine bottles, which cost around R950 000, were added, per IOL, along with what is presumed to be a couple of gold-coated steaks that cost an arm and a leg each.
The restaurateur, known for his signature salt-sprinkling pose, put the eye-watering bill on Instagram with an audacious comment to really get people going:

A lot of people have called the bill “insane” and “all ego”, with one disappointed follower commenting that “seeing this bill and thinking of my patients who cannot afford the cost of their liver transplant makes me sad,” per Kitchen:
“Seeing this dinner bill and thinking this could save an entire city from hunger for days makes me feel sad. No one should EVER pay $165 for still water,” another bewildered commenter wrote.
“A little excessive and this really shouldn’t be glorified,” a third commenter added.
Many other commenters came up with far better ways that money could have been spent, but alas, the chef was unbothered by the backlash.
He shoved his excess in everyone’s faces again by sharing an Instagram story of a ginormous steak covered in 24-karat gold leaf which retails for approximately R50 000:
That much gold can’t be good for the gut, but at least your diarrhoea will be pretty.
Gökçe owns 22 Nusr-Et restaurants, many of which are in Turkey and the US, and has served high-fliers like David Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio.
While the recipient of this monstrous bill is not known, a number of high-profile people are currently in and around Abu Dhabi thanks to yesterday’s Formula One race and the FIFA World Cup next door in Qatar.
