In this increasingly diversifying world, the Grammy Awards have so many musicians to keep up with and so many genres to think about.

And that’s only considering the “Outstanding Achievement in the music industry” of the United States.

While the nominations will always include the usual pop, rock, classic, country, and so on, you can forget about seeing representation for some of the more obscure music genres, like folktronica (a blend of electronic and folk), simpsonwave (The Simpsons audio with Vaporwave), hypnagogic pop (dream-like psychedelia), and kawaii core (heavy metal, but cute, dah) to name a few.

They may just be squeezed under the banner of ‘alternative music’, though.

Since the nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards have been announced, you’re going to have to settle in for the best in the business, which includes the likes of Beyoncé, Adele, and Taylor Swift, all doing their thing and collecting a lifetime haul of golden gramophones to go unconquered.

For the first time since 2017, Beyoncé will be competing with Adele, so things might get spicy. Although, if Adele wins she might just do that thing she did last time, which was to tearfully call Beyoncé “the artist of [her] life” and say she deserves to win the trophy.

Back in 2020, Beyoncé set a record for most Grammys held by a female artist, winning Best R&B Performance for ‘Black Parade’. They don’t call her the queen for no reason.

Pitchfork notes that the Recording Academy has actually introduced five new awards for 2023, which include:

Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical; Best Alternative Music Performance; Best Americana Performance; Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media; and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. There will also be a Special Merit Award titled Best Song for Social Change.

Yep, the Weeknd and Drake are continuing their boycott of the awards in 2023, even though the Grammys ended its practice of secret-committee nominations in the Big Four categories following protests from them last year.
