Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is busy smashing box office records across the African continent.
In West Africa, it became the biggest industry opening weekend of all time and in East and Southern Africa, it was the biggest opening weekend box office of 2022.
Globally, the film cracked an opening weekend gross of $331 million, meaning it has a chance of joining Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion as the only $1 billion global box office hits of 2022.
It makes sense to piggyback on that for marketing purposes, as long as it’s done well, and Chicken Licken has delivered.
CapeTalk reports
The chicken chain revived its big burger legend with an African queen setting down in Cape Town in a futuristic spaceship, her warriors on a desperate mission to find “Big John”.
“Big John beats Ya’hunga forever” the ad proclaims. The entire campaign is styled like the real thing, but with a South African twist.
The window washer, the traffic cop, the isiXhosa jibe – as you can see, it’s very well done:
According to advertising expert Oresti Patricios, CEO of the Ornico Group, the campaign “out-trended the actual movie on social media”.
That’s a big claim but we’ll take his word for it, being an expert and all.
Meanwhile, Nando’s is left bickering with Pedros about what is and isn’t belittling.
