Beach volleyball.
Any of our numerous beaches would be quite a fitting setting, right?
Go on, guess which one is hosting the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 running this week until Sunday, November 6.
The correct answer is none. As IOL reports, it’s being held at the Grand Parade:
A faux beach arena has been erected and Cape Town is set to host this prestigious tournament for the next five days. However, Capetonians have been left baffled by the faux beach, considering the beautiful beaches along the Mother City’s coastline.
In response to enquiries made by IOL, the mayoral committee member for safety and security, Alderman JP Smith, said the decision to host the tournament at the Grand Parade was not made by the City of Cape Town.
Instead, it’s the event organisers who get to choose where the action goes down.

Smith did point out that the Grand Parade is a popular outdoor venue and its proximity to public transport is a major plus for organisers and attendees.
At night, it looks pretty impressive:

I can’t say I would be all that keen to rely on public transport in the heart of the CBD when the sun goes down.
By my maths, on average, one is offered drugs every 18,6 metres along Long Street and getting home from the Grand Parade could be interesting.
Thanks, Didi
