Despite the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns has won the past five PSL (now known as the DStv Premiership) titles, there’s no doubt that the Soweto Derby is the standout fixture of the season.
When Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates do battle, local football comes to a standstill.
On Saturday, a sold-out crowd in excess of 90 000 watched on as the match appeared headed for a stalemate. Enter Chiefs midfielder Yusuf Maart and a goal that will live long in the memory of his side’s supporters, as well as any neutrals watching around the country.
Maart’s rocket from inside his own half left goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane looking a little daft and sparked scenes of wild celebration between the Chiefs players and supporters:
SuperSport actually monitored the noise levels in the stadium before and after the goal, which is a pretty nifty feature:

Footage of the long-range effort spread quickly and even caught the attention of the official FIFA account. ‘The Puskas list’ refers to the FIFA Puskás Award, given each year to “the player judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant goal, regardless of championship, gender or nationality and scored without the result of luck or a mistake and in support of fair play”.
A stunning goal to win the #SowetoDerby
This strike from @KaizerChiefs’ Yusuf Maart could be one for the #Puskas list

Yep, chuck it on the list.
Even if he doesn’t win, Maart has cemented his place in Chiefs folklore with one of the greatest-ever derby goals.
While we are on the topic of long-range strikes, how about this from Jordan Hendrikse over the weekend?
