Trevor Noah has been accused of stealing jokes, sending tweets back in the day that some interpreted as anti-Semitic and misogynistic, and selling out for cash when he punted Cell C, which he had previously bashed during his standup routines.
Despite that, his reputation could be described as ‘squeaky clean’ in that he still lands major hosting gigs, unlike a certain Kevin Hart, for example.
As he readies himself to leave his hosting gig at The Daily Show, the South African comedian has come under fire after a row over a skit he did about the appointment of Rishi Sunak as the new British prime minister.
This via the BBC:
Noah had said there had been a “backlash” over Mr Sunak. His comments were criticised in the UK, with many including ex-chancellor Sajid Javid calling Noah “simply wrong”.
But Noah has now defended his segment, saying he was reacting to racists, and: “That’s why I said. ‘Some people’.”
Sunak, who officially took over the reins last Tuesday, is the UK’s first British Asian prime minister.
Noah highlighted one particular call-in to radio station LBC as an example of “some people” being racist:
Meet Rishi Sunak, Britain’s new PM who is only 42, meaning he’ll probably serve well into his 42-and-a-halves pic.twitter.com/KLCNYy6hNE

He later addressed the backlash further in a ‘Between the Scenes’ segment:
Former Tory leadership contender Rory Stewart called Noah’s remarks “completely bizarre” and an example of “lazy stereotyping”.
A spokesperson for Downing Street said the new prime minister did not believe Britain was a racist country.
It was all too much for Piers Morgan to bear and he waded into the conversation, garnering a response from Noah himself:
C’mon Piers you’re smarter than that. I wasn’t saying “The entire U.K. is racist”, I was responding to the racists who don’t want Rishi as PM because of his race. That’s why I said. “Some people” 🙃https://t.co/QQgEQ45wJU https://t.co/bhurdPvsE8

Is Piers smarter than that, though? Naturally, he hit back and couldn’t resist fitting in a swipe at Meghan Markle:
No, you c’mon Trevor… there was no ‘backlash’ in UK to @RishiSunak becoming PM because of his heritage. You made that up to create a racism narrative that simply didn’t happen… and we Brits are bored of US media (& disingenuous duchesses) making us out to be a bunch of racists. https://t.co/V9h8iWpClm

Case closed, British people aren’t racist.
What a relief.
