The latest Best Global University Ranking for 2022/23 has just been published.

The ranking considers the top 2 000 tertiary institutions all around the globe with a specific focus on the academic research and reputation of the school overall.

The latest edition includes universities from more than 90 countries, with China dominating with 338 institutions on the list, followed by the US (280), Japan (105), the UK (92), and India (81).

A humble 13 South African universities are among the best in the world, according to this ranking, seven of which have landed in the top 500, notes BusinessTech. That’s one more than the previous rankings.

That is thanks to the North-West University (Potch), which has joined the list at 487th position overall.

Not much has changed for the University of Cape Town, which has once again topped the local list, albeit at 125th position overall, making it the only local university ranked within the top 150.

It has been knocked down a few notches compared to its 2021/22 position when it ranked 109th.

Likewise, Wits, the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, Rhodes University, the Tshwane University of Technology, and Nelson Mandela University all took a little slide down the ranking, too.

On the other hand, Stellenbsoch University, UKZN, Potch, the University of the Western Cape, UFS, and Unisa all managed to climb up a few rungs.

The only significant change in the local list is the University of the Free State climbing to 875th position, overtaking Rhodes University, which slipped to 935th. Those universities are now ranked 10th and 11th, respectively.

The ranking maintains a consistent focus on institutions that prioritise academic research, with institutions needing to meet the minimum threshold of a couple of data points.

The ranking makes use of indicators and weighting including global and regional research reputation (which needs to reach 12,5% each), amount of publications (which should be at 10%), and total citations (which should be around 7,5%), among others.
