It looks like the owner of that black Ferrari that crashed into a blue Audi R8 in Sea Point over the weekend has the same attitude as me when it comes to cars.
For me, a car is like a pair of takkies: I refuse to spend a small fortune on them because they’re meant to get used, scuffed, and heavily dusted.
But while I have a humble Chevy Spark, JP van der Spuy said his black Ferrari cost him just over R8 million.
Most amazingly, he said he is basically unfazed by the multimillion-rand crash that left his Ferrari crumpled into the rear of an Audi R8 on the corner of Beach and Arthur roads in Sea Point on Saturday, per News24:
“I’ll probably have to fork out a couple of million to fix it, which is okay. My Ferrari will be fine, no biggie.”
Just a couple million, no biggie:
The 36-year-old said he saw all the social media posts coming in hot over the weekend, with many people speculating about the cause and cost:
“I was not driving my car at the time, but my close friend was. The driver of the Audi is a very close friend of mine as well, and there is honestly no beef between any of us regarding the situation. Both of them were on their way home from the gym when the incident took place. I was not in the vehicle, but dashed down immediately when I got the call,” said Van der Spuy, who heads a gambling and sports betting website.
Just need to dash out, be back in a seccie:
Apparently, the Audi was not moving when the Ferrari crashed into the back of it:
“It’s a little fender bender accident which will probably cost me a few million to repair. From what I understood when I arrived on the scene, my friend who drove my car said when he applied brakes, he probably accidentally clipped the accelerator – or [there was] brake failure – as the car shot forward at 30 kilometres per hour, and that’s when it hit the Audi.
“He was driving at just under 50 kilometres [per hour], but geared down while approaching the red robot. [I’m] only speculating that he hit both pedals; it can also be brake failure which the diagnostics will conclude.”
Van der Spuy said he thought the driver was more traumatised that he knocked his car, but that they were all good and even chilled together that evening:
“Ag man, these things could happen to anyone. I’m not a material kinda guy, and I fully understand why social media was so interested in making up assumptions about the incident. The cars crashed, both drivers are perfectly fine, and honestly, that’s all that matters right now,” Van der Spuy added.
He confirmed that his car is currently in for repairs, and has yet to get the bill for it, adding that “it’s going to cost me a few pennies”.
The Audi costs around R3 million and could be written off due to the extent of the damage. Van der Spuy explained that because it was two supercars involved, the engines are sitting at the back, so hitting the engine in the rear like that can make the car a write-off.
No biggie, I am sure.
