The ‘business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back’-do peaked in popularity in the 1980s and then became comedic fodder shortly thereafter.
But the USA Mullet Championships have brought the mullet back into the spotlight, allowing dudes from across the US to show off their cool coiffures.
Even kids get a chance to show off their mullet mania in their own little championship.
The man who was crowned with the nation’s top adult mullet is really passionate about his hairstyle, comparing it to life on a jet ski and all.
After 600 entries, three rounds of voting, and nearly 30 000 overall online votes, the 2022 USA Mullet Championship was awarded to Scott Salvadore from New York with ‘The Lord’s Drapes’:
Scott received 3 740 votes, while second-place winner Dalton Cleghorn from Ohio bagged 3 208 votes with his ‘Mulletmania’ and Brandon Hernandez from Texas, rocking the ‘Texas Tailgate’, received 2 855 votes in third place.
On Saturday, October 22, the three men appeared live on TODAY alongside competition founder, Kevin Begola, to see who would win the competition.
The prize included $2 500 (R45 000), sponsorship packages, and the honour of knowing you have the best mullet in all 50 US states:
Scott boasts neatly-trimmed golden locks that he said have become central to his identity over the past few years:
Before Salvadore grew out his championship-winning mullet, he had actually cut his original mullet off for his girlfriend, but grew it back after the couple got married. He explained, “When I cut that first mullet off, it was such a part of my identity, I felt like a part of me died.”
I guess you don’t choose The Lord’s Drapes, The Lord’s Drapes choose you:
“Mullet chose me and I cut it off. I had some cold neck problems, I wasn’t happy about it,” he added, joking. “As far as happiness goes, I think mullets are a lot like jet skis and to quote my fellow brother in ‘Mulletdom,’ Kenny Powers, ‘I’ve never a sad person on a jet ski.’”
Both the other contestants concur about the mullet being a big part of their overall life enjoyment, with Cleghorn saying, “they say party in the back, but it’s honestly party all around.”
Hernandez, whose wife entered him into the competition, also talked about mullet culture:
“It’s just an all around good feeling, the good life. You waking up every day with a positive attitude and tenacious attitude while having fun living life.”
“When you hear local people shouting out ‘Nice mullet bro!’ it feels good,” he added. “Mullets are back and it’s back now with some modern day swag.”
Check out the moment Scott won in the TODAY segment:
“You gotta have rocks to grow the locks,” Scott said about the once-maligned hairstyle that allowed him to win cash and fame.
He certainly is rocking the locks now.
