King Charles III’s coronation has been penned in for May 6, 2023, and there are evidently some awkward questions to address before the big day arrives.
For one, the day happens to also be his grandson Archie’s fourth birthday.
Well, well, well.
Royal experts say that that is not a snub from King Charles to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, though.
Clashing dates are the least of it when it comes to the Royals’ inner drama, with the coronation guest list left on the “TBC” pile. This makes a point of leaving the door open for Harry and Meghan to either be included or excluded, notes The Daily Beast.
It looks like their invite hinges on one condition – that they both don’t say a bad word about the new King, but especially the Queen Consort, in the seven months that remain until the crowning ceremony.
Tension is rising among those in Charles’ circle in the lead-up to Harry releasing his still-scheduled memoir, which will be an “entirely honest” account of his life. That means it will surely detail the collapse of Charles and Diana’s marriage, caused in part, as Diana herself clearly said, by Charles’ ongoing affair with Camilla.
An attack on Camilla’s character would be devastating to Charles, who has spent decades hard at work to make the British public accept her, according to a friend of the new queen:
“Almost everything Charles has done over the past twenty years has, in one way or another, been about getting Camilla accepted by the public,” the friend said.
“He loves her. He is incredibly protective of her and he couldn’t do it without her. Even the queen finally accepted that. It is one thing for Harry to attack Charles, he can take it on the chin, but if Harry forces him to choose, by laying into Camilla in his book, I have no doubt he will choose Camilla.”
Katie Nicholl, author of The New Royals and Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent, has some thoughts:
“There is no doubt that Charles would like Harry and Meghan to be at his coronation. And to be fair to Charles, he has been magnanimous in terms of extending, very publicly, olive branches to the Sussexes, not only in his televised accession address but also putting them front and center at the funeral events.
“But he does expect respect in return, and a problem is going to arise if, between now and then, Harry repays him by attacking him, Camilla or the institution. He is not going to put up with inaccurate and unfair attacks.
“The ball is in the Sussexes’ court,” she added. “The royals, just like the rest of us, are waiting to see what they will do next.”
Duncan Larcombe, a royal author and former royal editor at the Sun, reiterated the point that what is and isn’t said in Harry’s book will be crucial.
He called it “the most eagerly awaited royal book of all time and the first to be written by a family member”.
Harry may or may not be ferociously rewriting the parts in his book that concern his father and Camilla, asking himself if it is worth going up against the new figurehead of the British Royal Family.
