Naturally, the world’s richest man likes to party.
He has to ease out of those extremely long work days and an infamously packed schedule somehow, and based on his fondness for psychedelic drugs, well, you get the gist.
The billionaire has been known to frequent weekend-long parties and other extravagant social gatherings, as detailed in a recent New York Times feature about his “strange” social calendar.
“When the world’s richest man isn’t tweeting, he’s flying to Burning Man, trying to impress comedians and hopping on yachts,” the byline reads. Intriguing.
Diving further in, you’ll find that the Tesla / SpaceX CEO quite enjoys touting the beneficial effects of psychedelic drugs like mushrooms and MDMA.
The magazine spoke to over 40 people who have spent time with Musk over the past few years, Business Insider notes, “many under conditions of anonymity due to concerns of repercussions, as well as non-disclosure agreements that they were required to sign at the parties Musk attended”.
But still, they revealed a few details:
For the past 20 years, Musk has attended nearly every Burning Man festival — often accompanied by his younger brother, Kimbal Musk…
“I have been with him on mild exploratory journeys,” David Marglin, a Bay Area lawyer who met Mr. Musk at Burning Man and has been his friend for 20 years, told The Times. “And he appreciates the value of those journeys. Nothing out of control or wild, but it’s all night, and there’s dancing and revelry.”
Musk often segues the conversation towards the topic, and even has a chart to boot, per Futurism:
…Musk likes to pass around a chart purporting to explain why 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and psilocybin mushrooms are healthier choices than alcohol.
The billionaire seriously thinks we should all be considering the health benefits of these kinds of drugs more:
“I think, generally, people should be open to psychedelics,” Musk said during a 2021 interview. “A lot of people making laws are kind of from a different era, so I think, as the new generation gets into political power, I think we will see greater receptivity to the benefits of psychedelics.”
He has also tweeted in response to billionaire investor Marc Andreessen’s thread on the issue:
I’ve talked to many more people who were helped by psychedelics & ketamine than SSRIs & amphetamines
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 30, 2022
SSRIs are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which are often prescribed to treat depression. He has also said before that he thinks psychedelics can be “pretty helpful” for PTSD and depression, and he’s correct on that front.
There have also been clinical trial results showing that MDMA may be useful in treating patients with PTSD but that needs to be done under the supervision of a therapist.
Meanwhile, Musk and the “whole of SpaceX” were subjected to random drug tests for a year after he appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and smoked weed (that image right up top).
Musk isn’t the only big shot to have an infinity for recreational drugs.
Apple founder Steve Jobs famously encouraged the idea of micro-dosing on LSD or psilocybin in order to promote creativity.
