With Ukrainian forces making huge inroads into territories Russia’s army had previously controlled, Vladimir Putin is getting desperate.
During a recent televised address to the nation, the Russian president stated that hostilities in Ukraine now threaten the very existence of Russia and said talk of using nuclear weapons “is not a bluff”.
We haven’t reached nuclear yet, but the past 24 or so hours have seen wave after wave of explosions in Kyiv and across the country.
Civilian targets included a major road junction next to a university and a children’s playground in a park. Sergei Surovikin, the commander of the attack on Ukraine, has been described as ‘absolutely ruthless, with little regard for human life’.
One Kyiv woman captured the moment she was almost taken out by a blast from a Russian missile attack in the capital city. According to Business Insider, the video was uploaded to Twitter by an advisor to Ukraine’s interior ministry, Anton Gerashchenko:
“My hands are shaking, I just saw a rocket flying”, says a lady in the center of Kyiv.

That’s a pretty narrow escape.
In addition to attacks on Kyiv, the likes of Lviv, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, and Zaporizhzhia have also come under heavy fire.
Putin said the attacks were in retaliation to a key supply route connecting Russia and Crimea being damaged on Sunday.
The indiscriminate targeting of Ukrainian civilians raises the prospect of a “horrific new turn in a vicious war”.
