Some people have tried to live on just pizza.
It does seem to have everything that a well-balanced diet requires. There’s the carbs, the veg, the dairy, and the protein. What more could you need or want?
Pizza is good and everyone loves pizza, I think we can agree. But some pizzas have a better rep than others, which is where the Top Pizza’s ranking of the 100 best in the world comes in.
As Robb Report notes, if you’re looking for the best pizza on the planet, you’re going to have to travel a bit.
Tied for the honour of the best pizzeria in the world are Francesco Martucci’s I Masanielli in Caserta, Italy, and Anthony Mangieri’s Una Pizza Napoletana in New York.
The guide’s curators said in a statement that the ranking “encompasses many different styles of pizza, even if, obviously, the Neapolitan style, both classic and contemporary, is the most popular”.
They added that it was really satisfying and rewarding to “journey around the world to capture the current pizza panorama”. I wish I was invited. How rude.
40 Italian pizzerias were named on the list, along with 25 elsewhere in Europe, 15 in the US, 15 in the Asia-Pacific area, four in South America, and only one in Africa.
It is cool to see every continent with at least one of its pizza places making the grade, but come on, South Africa surely has a few contenders.
Honestly, it’s a travesty that Butler’s wasn’t selected considering how it’s been Cape Town’s number one pizza place for more than 30 years.
We love a smart delivery.
Anyway, the best pizza in Africa went to What the Crust in Cairo, Egypt, which just cracked the nod at 100th on the list:

They boast of being Africa’s first and only AVPN affiliate pizzeria. AVPN refers to the True Neapolitan Pizza Association (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana), a non-profit organisation that ensures a pizza is exactly as it would be in Naples.
What the Crust goes to great lengths to bring real Neapolitan technique and tradition to Cairo, including the truly authentic, handmade Neapolitan ovens and top-quality local and imported Italian ingredients.

Tthe Lower East Side’s Una Pizza Napoletana has been a longtime favourite in the region:
Mangieri brought Neapolitan pies to the city at a time when most places were selling classic, floppy NYC slices.
He left for San Francisco in 2010 but came back to America’s pizza capital in 2018, where he’s been slinging up pies ever since.
“Every day since opening Una Pizza in 1996 I’ve had the dream to pursue this work without compromise,” he said in a statement when Una Pizza Napoletana was honored as the best pizzeria in the U.S.
Mangieri added that he’s #blessed to do what he does and continues to learn and grow.
