South Africa’s Military Police Division (MPD) is rife with allegations of underhanded dealings.
Important dockets vanish into thin air, as do Special Forces firearms, and generals are regarded as untouchable.
Officers speaking on condition of anonymity says interference in ongoing investigations has become part and parcel of working for the MPD and anybody who speaks out could be in line for retaliation.
There are also allegations of fraud to the value of more than R200 million related to personal protective equipment (PPE) during COVID-19.
You could put together a true-crime series on the MPD but Derek Watts and the team at Carte Blanche team decided to zero in on one highly contentious issue which took place this February in Pretoria:
Two young men, apparently mistaken for intruders near the home of a high-ranking army officer, disappear. According to witnesses, the men were allegedly assaulted by soldiers guarding the house – all while two senior South African Defence Force officers purportedly stood by.
Three low-ranking soldiers are arrested and charged with kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Neither senior officer is ever arrested. While the case is postponed for further investigation, families grieve.
But will they ever learn the truth behind their loved ones’ disappearance and supposed death?
The team looked into what it calls “a case of selective prosecution” where it’s alleged that high-ranking army generals could be involved in a cover-up.
