Someone managed to capture the moment a woman was frantically running away from a seal on Fish Hoek Beach.
Somehow, the woman decided the best way to skedaddle to safety was to run backwards. She fell twice, allowing the seal to catch up to her, before eventually rectifying her course and getting the hell out of there.
The seal’s tenacity in getting the only human off the beach at the time is commendable.
Ja, hey, you don’t simply get to take a picture of the creature as you please.
As Cape Town Etc notes, seals – nicknamed the puppy dogs of the sea – are generally gentle until they feel threatened.
The woman was reportedly trying to take a photograph when the seal charged, even though she appeared to be at a reasonable enough distance away from the creature.
The video of the situation made its way around WhatsApp and was also shared on Reddit:
The running backwards idea is like a cliche straight out of a bad movie, some Redditors noted. No wonder she fell twice.
Also, please note the satisfied-looking slump that the seal makes after the lady is well away.
Watching the viral video of a pair of angry sea lions chasing after beachgoers at a San Diego beach in July, you’ll learn that these animals of the sea are quite territorial, especially when potential mates are nearby.
Either that or the seal wanted its peace sans camera clicking. Fair enough.
Cornwall Seal Group suggests moving calmly and slowly, so as not to make the animal more anxious and provoke a more hectic response.
