The classic bodycon dress has taken on a whole new meaning.

Now it’s not about tight-fitting polyester and more about a spray-painted substance that magically turns into a dress.

Gracing the runway for the spring/summer 2023 show at the end of Paris Fashion Week for fashion label Coperni, Bella Hadid strolled out in just a nude thong and white kitten heels.

Then, some tech-sci dudes made a concoction with a cutting-edge new liquid and used spray paint guns to dress the model up, bit by bit, in a stunning little white dress.

After clearing the excess fibres away, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that the dress had been formed on the spot.

Yes, The Daily Mail did report on the moment with the usual phrases like “the beauty flaunted her figure” or showed off her “ample assets” in a “figure hugging gown…with a saucy thigh-high split”.

For the science behind the grand finale that has had the “internet buzzing with wide-eyed fascination and disbelief”, we turn to Elle.

Founded by Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer (below) in 2019, Coperni is basically synonymous with fashion that pushes the boundaries through scientific innovation:

‘The brand is named after Copernicus, the Renaissance-era astronomer, so it’s inspired by science, progress, innovation and technology,’ Vaillant told ELLE UK in an interview earlier this year, when they had already experimented with hand-blown glass handbags, antibacterial clothes and XR-shot campaigns.

But for SS23, the duo truly outdid themselves by joining forces with Spanish fashion designer and scientist Manel Torres and his team at London’s Bioscience Innovation Centre to develop the spray-on dress.

The spray is made up of Torres’ Fabrican liquid that contains [cotton or synthetic] fibres suspended in a polymer solution, that evaporates as soon as it makes contact with the body.

Another cool part of the fabric is that it can be removed and turned back into a solution only to be used again.

Meyer acknowledged that they’re not going to make money on this, “but it’s a beautiful moment – an experience that creates emotion”.

It’s certainly an outfit that had the masses enthralled.
