Why Trevor Noah’s Leaving ‘The Daily Show’ [Video]

Last night, and totally out of the blue for the general public, Trevor announced he would be stepping down as host and leaving the show altogether.

When Trevor Noah took over from Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show back in 2015, he was relatively unknown in the US.

Seven years later, he’s hosted the Grammys and countless other high-profile events and become a household name across the English-speaking world.

Not bad for a guy who was Born a Crime in Jozi.

Last night, Trevor announced he would be stepping down as host and leaving the show altogether.

The New York Times reports:

“We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together,” Mr. Noah said during a taping of the show on Thursday that was released before the show aired. “But after seven years, I feel like it’s time.”

Comedy Central said in a statement that the network had been working with Mr. Noah “for a long time to figure out how he can maintain the demanding schedule.”

The network added that “with no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps.”

In a nutshell, the 38-year-old said he realised he missed touring his stand-up comedy and it’s a part of his life that he wants to “carry on exploring”.

We’ll let him tell you in his own words:

Fair enough.

I don’t think he’ll make quite as much dosh each year doing stand-up. In 2017, he reportedly signed a new contract with Viacom which doubled his salary for hosting The Daily Show to $16 million per season.

His announcement is good news for those who disliked watching him host but still watched for some reason, as well as being good news for his fans in South Africa.

The comedian has certainly had a headline-grabbing week.

Yesterday, The Daily Mail published photos of Dua Lipa and Trevor “kissing and hugging on a cosy night out” in New York City:

They appeared to have some stellar chemistry as they concluded the evening on a high note with a romantic kiss and a sweet hug before going their separate ways.

An onlooker tells DailyMail: ‘They were quietly sat away from everyone else at restaurant. It was clear they were into each other and sat close together throughout the meal. They left together and walked, stopping for long embraces and on the second kiss with hugs.’

Thanks, unnamed onlooker.

Trevor and Minka Kelly split up a while back and Dua Lipa split from Gigi and Bella Hadid’s brother, Anwar Hadid, last December.

Big week, big energy.
