Nowhere in the “full story” of Princess Charlene’s debilitating health battle was there a mention of a drug rehabilitation stint.
Hello Magazine claims to have the truth mapped out in its article about the struggles that hid the Princess of Monaco from public life for just under a year.
It goes on to mention how Charlene spent most of 2021 here in South Africa with an illness that disabled her from returning home to Monaco.
That meant she had to spend much of the year away from her two children, six-year-old twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques.
It also meant she couldn’t see her husband, Prince Albert II, including on their 10th wedding anniversary, which came at a somewhat convenient time, as he was in the throes of rumours about a possible third love child.
Official statements, including one from the Prince, tried to assure the public that her absence had nothing to do with problems in their marriage.

After Charlene returned to Monaco in early November last year, her struggles continued, with the Palais Princier formally announcing that the royal was taking “time to recover” from her recent “poor health”.
Meanwhile, Prince Albert also confirmed that she was receiving treatment in a facility “outside of Monaco”, which is when the idea about her actually being in a drug rehab started.
Hello Magazine reported that Prince Albert mention a “family-style intervention took place with Charlene” after his trip to Dubai last year, around that time:
“I sat her down with her brothers and a sister-in-law. She had already made her decision, and we only wanted her to confirm it in front of us. She wanted this. She already knew the best thing to do was to go and have a rest and have a real medically framed treatment. And not in Monaco. For privacy reasons, it would have to be someplace outside of Monaco.”
He added: “Obviously there were consequences of her different surgeries and the procedures she underwent in the last few months. That certainly was a factor, but at this point I prefer not to comment further. I can say she was suffering incredible fatigue. She hadn’t slept well in a number of days and she wasn’t eating at all well. She has lost a lot of weight, which made her vulnerable to other potential ailments. A cold or the flu or God help us, COVID.”
He vehemently dismissed certain speculation around Charlene’s health:
“Because I know there are rumours out there, let me say: This is not COVID. And it’s not cancer-related. It’s not a personal relationship issue. And if you want to discuss another speculation, it isn’t related to plastic surgery or facial work at all.”
Still no mention of possible substance abuse problems, though.
That’s the thing – an official account of what “happened” does very little to abate the rumours, which are often far juicier than the proposed truth.
The official accounts state that she had been struggling with “exhaustion, both emotional and physical” and had collapsed on September 1 when she was rushed to hospital. This was said to be due to complications following one of several surgeries for a severe ear, nose, and throat (ENT) infection, which had been rather persistent.
For that, she had surgery in mid-May, before the second operation in June, with the “final” surgery taking place in October.
The Prince confirmed that this all went well and that she would return to public life soon after.

Since then she has been seen out and about looking well enough, as promised.
