MacKenzie Scott has not only given away a vast fortune since splitting from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, but she has also ended another marriage.
She went from marrying the wealthiest man in the world (back then, it was Bezos) to marrying a man on the other end of the wealth spectrum, a science teacher at the Seattle private school that her kids attended.
But now she and Dan Jewett are officially splitting, too, reports The New York Times.
The couple announced their intention to give away their bonkers fortune together after marrying in 2021 in California.
Following on from MacKenzie’s petition for divorce filed in Washington State’s King County Superior Court on Monday, Dan’s name has been slowly removed from recent donation announcements.
It has also been taken out of bios and profiles showcasing their once collaborative philanthropic efforts.
PEOPLE has the terms of the divorce:
Jewett did not contest the divorce. Terms of a division of property have been agreed to in a contract that has not been made public as part of a separation contract.
Court documents did not confirm the presence of prenup but the former couple used a separation contract in which former spouses agree on the terms of the separation, including what becomes of the marital property.
MacKenzie has a net worth of $34,9 billion as of the time of writing and has forked out $12 billion to nonprofits over the course of the past three years.
Jewett had publicly promised to join her in donating their enormous fortune to good causes, but it seems their philanthropic partnership is also no more:
Previously, grateful nonprofits that had received grants from Ms. Scott and Mr. Jewett thanked them both, but recent recipients thank her alone.
In the past week his name vanished from her philanthropic endeavors. On the site for the Giving Pledge, where billionaires promise to give away half of their wealth before they die, his letter no longer appeared with hers. Without fanfare, his name was recently edited out of a Medium post Ms. Scott had written last year about their gifts.
MacKenzie, a novelist, has also deleted Dan’s name from her author bio on Amazon.
Two years after MacKenzie promised to “keep at it until the safe is empty” in her 2019 letter on the Giving Pledge, Dan wrote his own Giving Pledge letter full of enthusiasm:
“I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others,” he wrote.
Yet he also noted that he had not previously considered making any kind of public statement about his charitable priorities because he had “never sought to gather the kind of wealth required to feel like saying such a thing would have particular meaning.”
Without having much to go on, perhaps things became a bit much for Dan.
When he married MacKenzie, “arguably the most influential philanthropist in the world with an approach that emphasised huge grants”, he had to leave the school he was working at.
I am not sure what his current money situation is, but I can’t imagine he’ll be going hungry.
