The United States Armed Forces is made up of six branches, the newest of which is the US Space Force.

Steve Carell and Netflix have already taken the piss with the comedy series, Space Force, and now the military branch is once more being ridiculed.

Last week, the official theme song, ‘Semper Supra’ – which is Latin for ‘always above’ – debuted at the 2022 Air, Space, and Cyber Conference.

Before we laugh at it, some basics via Gizmodo:

[Space Force] was established in 2019 when the National Defense Authorization Act was signed into law—as an independent body formerly part of the Air Force.

Since then, Space Force has been going through the motions of branding itself, like revealing its official uniform logos.

Some of the jokes write themselves (this tune is less than stellar) and even Military.com, a news and resource website for military members, veterans, and their families, couldn’t find anything nice to say.

Diplomatically, the theme tune was referenced as “not a banger”:

If you’d like to break down the lyrics, here’s what you’re working with:

 “We’re the mighty watchful eye / Guardians beyond the blue / The invisible front line / Warfighters brave and true.

“Boldly reaching into space / there’s no limit to our sky / Standing guard both night and day / We’re the Space Force from on high.”

It’s a touch dystopian for me.

A “mighty watchful eye” with “no limit”? Sounds like something a drone in China would say.

James Teachenor, a former member of the U.S. Air Force Band, wrote the lyrics and said he wanted them “to encompass all the capabilities that the Space Force offers and its vision”.

Kevin Baron, the military executive editor of Defense One (a website which provides news, analysis, and ideas about the future of national security), didn’t hold back:

“Boldly” steals from Star Trek (again.)

And how is one boldly “reaching into space” without going there?

There is a “limit to our sky”. It’s called space. Sky ends. Space begins.

These lyrics are the verbal word salad version of a bad Air Force painting.
