The first four seasons of The Crown have always brilliantly balanced celebrating Queen Elizabeth II and what the British Royal Family stands for while also being critical of some aspects of the institution.

In season five, all eyes are on the endpoint of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage, described as an “all-out war” in the teaser trailer that has just been released.

Netflix’s historical drama is set in the 1990s this season, per The Independent, with Elizabeth Debicki taking over the role of the late Princess of Wales.

Dominic West plays the monarch-to-be in the new season, while Imelda Staunton will be stepping into Queen Elizabeth II’s shoes. Jonathan Pryce plays Prince Philip.

The scandals that leaked from Diana and Charles’ marriage are still talked about more than 30 years later and The Crown has only refuelled interest in this tragic part of the Queen’s reign, notes Collider:

Season 4 masterfully highlighted the ups and downs of the early part of their marriage with the performances by Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor being absolutely soul crushing.

One of the focuses of season 5 will be the final part of Diana’s life before her untimely death in 1997. Like the past seasons, the way the Crown is portrayed in the British media will be a major player here as well which the teaser hauntingly sets up.

The Daily Mail reported that Buckingham Palace is making moves to protect King Charles’ reputation from this “exploitative” dramatisation of his relationship with Princess Di, and also his affair with Queen Consort Camilla.

The Crown season five comes to Netflix on November 9.

Production is currently underway on the show’s sixth and final season after a brief break for the Queen’s funeral.
