On the way to school each morning, we would drive past Tarrystone, the Constantia property once owned by Princess Diana’s brother.
You could get a brief glimpse of the property through the gate but I always wondered what lay behind the huge walls.
Before Earl Spencer sold the property in 2000, Princess Diana often visited. In fact, the suite Diana used has been preserved since her passing in 1997 and Business Insider SA says the property is “popularly known for its connection to British royalty”.
Diana’s last visit was in January 1997. She died in a car accident in August of that same year.
From March 1 next year, Tarrystone is up for rent. It’s listed by the Dogon Group for R290 000 a month:
Located just off Southern Cross Drive it comprises around 2 acres of land and has views over False Bay. The double-storey home comprises about 1 100sqm in floor space with large rooms, double-volume ceilings, state-of-the-art security (including a guardhouse), guest cottages, a manager’s office, private vineyards, a tennis court, fully equipped gym room, Jacuzzi, koi pond and a swimming pool.
Tarrystone is undoubtedly the most desirable property in the Southern Suburbs, ideal for entertaining on a grand scale. The home and cottages are rented fully furnished. The finishes and decor are exceptional with a 10-seater cinema / media room. The private vineyard currently produces about 300 bottles of private label Pinotage wine each year.
Producing and labelling your own wines is quite the bragging right.
I’d be taking guests down to the wine cellar (I assume it has one), pointing them in the direction of the private label, and then playing it coy.
Oh, that? Just a little Pinotage we threw together.
Can you really call Tarrystone “the most desirable property in the Southern Suburbs”? That R98 million gem on Price Drive may need a word.
Perhaps a video tour will settle that debate:
That R290 000 a month excludes utilities, by the way, but it does come furnished.
According to Business Insider SA, the property was listed for sale in 2014 for R80 million.
