Remember when President Cyril Ramaphosa used to jog on Sea Point Promenade and pose for smiling pictures with residents?
I reckon those days are long gone. He’s had more than four years in power, the lights don’t stay on, and imbeciles like Fikile Mbalula remain in positions of power. If Cyril runs on the Prom, I hope he’s heckled.
Do you know who is reasonably popular on the Prom? Cyclists. Earlier this year, the City of Cape Town proposed banning cyclists from a section of the Sea Point Promenade and invited the public to give their views.
Here’s CapeTalk:
The city suggested that the stretch on the promenade between Mouille Point to the Pavilion swimming pool should be reserved for pedestrians only, citing safety issues.
But most residents who took part in the engagement process didn’t agree.
“Our residents spoke loud and clear: they want the promenade to be open to all, be it for walking or jogging, or cycling, and we have heard them,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, councillor Rob Quintas.
The public participation process, held between March and April of this year, yielded close to 2 000 responses. Those were overwhelmingly in favour of the promenade being open to all, sheep included.
Quintas says that aspect of the proposal is now “off the table”.
The Urban Mobility Directorate has the following recommendations:
That bicycles, skateboards and rollerblades are permitted on the promenade.
The use of e-bikes and e-scooters is also permitted, subject to the approval by the City’s Recreation and Parks Department who manages public open spaces – including the promenade – in the Cape Town metro.
The sidewalk along Beach Road, adjacent to the promenade, is for the exclusive use of pedestrians.
There you go, people who want to walk in a Lycra and Spandex-free zone.
Stick to the sidewalk adjacent to the promenade and you should be good to go.
