Bohemian Rhapsody screenwriter Anthony McCarten and Harriet director Kasi Lemmons are bringing the soul of Whitney Houston to the big screen.
The biographical drama about the multifaceted life of the iconic singer, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, traces Houston’s steps from a New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time.
Naomi Ackie has taken on the daunting task of stepping into the shoes and voice of the legendary vocal powerhouse, with Clarke Peters as her papa, John Houston, and Tamara Tunie as her mama, Cissy Houston.
Showtime:
Houston became an instant sensation with her self-titled debut album in 1985, per Variety, and went on to make her acting debut alongside Kevin Costner in 1992’s romantic drama, The Bodyguard.
Later on, she also produced the Disney movies The Princess Diaries and The Cheetah Girls.
In 2012, at the age of 48, she drowned in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub after years of struggling with addiction.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody will be in theatres from December 21.
