The shipping container home movement has grown massively in global popularity over the past few years.
These homes are especially adept at switching to off-the-grid living – here’s looking at you, Eskom – and the lower building costs clearly resonate with many South Africans.
The so-called ‘tiny living’ trend is evidence of this although container homes don’t have to give up all the creature comforts.
In Austin, Texas, design company Bob’s Containers is now offering a premium model called The Porter. It’s easily one of the most ambitious shipping container-based homes we’ve seen and has features that are rare.
These include a large rooftop deck area with a tub and a relaxation net, reports autoevolution:
The container is 40 feet (12 metres) long with a width of 8 feet (2.4 metres), so the resulting home offers 320 square feet (29.8 square metres) of living space.
It’s tiny, granted, but it’s made to feel a bit more spacious through the use of light finishes, low-profile furniture, and a large wooden garage door with sections of glass.
This helps to open up the living room completely to the outdoor, offer the best ventilation and natural light and, just as importantly, prevent guest from feeling like they’re inside a box.
Cool – show me that tub:
The deck also has a dining table for two and chairs for watching the sunset.
It’s great that these containers are recycled and reused after years of traversing the globe via freight logistics companies like Berry & Donaldson.
YouTuber Levi Kelly took a tour of a model of The Porter recently to give you a better sense of the space:
I’d live there in a heartbeat, provided the container home had a little bit of privacy.
According to the website, Bob’s Containers will build you one starting from $149 250 (R2,6 million).
Damn, there’s always a catch.
