That still shot of Margot Robbie being held aloft in the midst of a decadent and wild party is just the tip of the iceberg that is writer-director Damien Chazelle’s new epic.
Six years after winning an Oscar for La La Land, Chazelle is back with an absolute banger. It’s a love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood, when silent films transitioned to talkies.
Mashable describes Babylon as an “exhibitionist epic on the highs and lows of movie magic, after parties, and copious amounts of drugs”.
Deadline describes it as “a tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess”. The film chronicles the rise and fall of multiple characters “during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood”.
While Robbie’s character is so drunk that she’s ready to fight a snake, Brad Pitt features as the erratic king of Hollywood, Jack Conrad.
Tobey Maguire, a character we have seen play around in 1920s decadence before, also features.
Chazelle said at the Toronto International Film Festival that “after the quietness of First Man, I wanted to do something boisterous and loud”.
Well, either way, we’re in for one hell of a ride when Babylon rolls out after Christmas Day.
