Brandewyn.
No, no no, you have to really roll your Rs like that guy does when he shouts Franco Mostert’s name.
Brrrrandewyn.
When the brandy comes out at the jol, you can always count on somebody to say ‘met eish, ja‘. I guess that’s the mark of a successful campaign because years later, the Klipdrift catchphrase has become a part of our lexicon.
I was reminded of it this week when I saw the CapeTalk discussion around LekkeSlaap’s new commercial, which gives a clear nod to Klippies.
Look at everybody smiling. Nobody in this video below has a clue what load shedding is. No wonder they seem so content:
Do people drink Klippies neat over ice? I can’t say I’ve ever viewed it as a sipping brandy.
The LekkeSlaap commercial, according to Zetu Damane, the Chief Strategic Officer at ad agency Think Creative Africa, is a bit of a miss:
More from Damane:
“They could have done it better… They could have tipped a hat to the Klipdrift ad, and that could have made it work. They could have acknowledged ‘we stole generously from this ad’. That could have made it a lot more acceptable.”
Bruce Whitfield pointed out that the ad backfired because after watching it, all he was thinking about was Klippies.
Fine, I’ll have a drink. Happy Thursday.
