One of the best private schools in the country has been acknowledged in Spear’s Magazine and Carfax Education’s 2022 Spear’s School Index, which collates 100 of the top-notch private schools in the world.
“There are superb schools across the world, in India and Pakistan, Australia and Africa,” notes Spear’s.
KwaZulu-Natal private school Michaelhouse was the only South African school to crack the nod.
The index divides schools according to geographic regions – UK Prep, UK Senior, Switzerland, Middle East, the rest of Europe, the US, China and South East Asia, and the rest of the world.
Michaelhouse ranked in the rest of the world region.
Spear’s Magazine noted the main details about Michaelhouse, pitting it as a senior school for boys which caters to both boarding and non-boarding pupils aged 13 to 18, per IOL:
“Michaelhouse is one of the most established boarding schools in South Africa. The school encourages each boy to find their niche in life, giving them the freedom to explore that niche and to become ‘the best one can be’. It’s a successful recipe, given the number of renowned sportsmen, politicians, academics, and authors (including Wilbur Smith) that have been educated here,” Spear’s said.
It also noted the school’s focus (“Tomorrow’s men of principle”), the travel time to the nearest airport (an hour and a half from King Shaka International Airport), the number of pupils allowed in (615 pupils), and the school fees.
Michaelhouse reckons it’s “everything money can’t buy”, which is another way of saying that the school fees are astronomical.
Besides all the acceptance fees, admission fees, admin fees, levy costs, and other additional charges, parents are forking out R328 000 in annual fees this year.
Next year it will go up to R342 000:

You’re paying for the best of the best after all:
The school said that it was a school of established heritage with an innate respect for the individual. It is this long-held tradition that distinguishes Michaelhouse from other senior boys’ schools.
It said that the educational programme of any top school should reflect a balance between academic, cultural, environmental and sporting activities. In this respect Michaelhouse endeavours to remain at the cutting edge of each pursuit.
Creating opportunities to develop the imagination, experimenting with ideas and experiencing the joy of creative expression are fundamental to the intellectual development of a Michaelhouse boy.
Other schools listed in the Rest of the World Index are Aitchison College (Pakistan), The Doon School (India), Geelong Grammar School (Australia), Lakefield College School (Canada), Mayo College Girls School (India), Pembroke House (Kenya), St George’s College (Argentina), and St Paul’s School (Brazil).
Nice to see two African schools on the list.
