Holding your nerve in the face of a charging elephant is not easy.
For armed guides and rangers, pulling the trigger should always be the last resort when it becomes clear that there is no other option available.
There’s a video doing the rounds at present, largely on WhatsApp, showing a pretty remarkable display of resolve from two guides.
You might have seen it already but we can add some extra context for those who are unsure about the exact circumstances.
The video was also uploaded to Facebook with the following description:
I do not know who filmed this, where or when it happened or who to credit. Recieved this via WhatsApp and just felt compelled to praise the guides for the ironclad restraint and composure they showed.
It would have been easy to shoot that Elephant, easily justified as well considering. However they showed tremendous courage and fortitude clearly gained from hours of practice at their craft.
In the comments underneath the video, further information was soon provided:
I popped past the African-Born Safaris website and there’s a section focusing on a four-night walking safari in the Pafuri Triangle, the northernmost section of the Kruger National Park:
The “triangle” is a wedge of land created by the confluence of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu at the tripoint Crook’s Corner, which forms a border with Zimbabwe along the Limpopo River. It is a natural choke point for wildlife crossing from North to South and back, and forms a distinct ecological region…
While game is plentiful, one is most likely to encounter Nyala, buffalo and Bushbuck in the riverine areas and drier adapted game, including white rhino, in the uplands. The area is famous for its elephant herds in winter, which come to drink from the Luvuvhu river.
The Pafuri region is also famous for its birdlife.
Credit to Devon and Sean for holding off on pulling those triggers.
Thanks, Dean
